With only six weeks to go, The Great Escape have just announced a further 100 acts that will appear in over 60 venues, with over 500 artists in total. 16,000 music fans and 3,500 industry delegates will descend upon Brighton for the best new music showcase in Europe.
Perhaps top of the list are hot Bristolian indie-punk rockers Idles. In inimitable fashion they replied on the news: “TANANEE TANANEE TANANEE TANANINGTING BOOYEH… with a little bit of luck you’ll be at The Great Escape festival to taste the rainbow with us morons.”
Brighton is very represented this year with two of our biggest and best acts; the grunge-inspired Demob Happy who have just released their second album Holy Doom, and melodic pop-rockers The Magic Gang, who’ve just released their self-titled debut to much acclaim. Joining them will be up and coming dream-poppers Breathe Panel, Lucie Barat, and the New Orleans high energy funky brass ensemble Voodoo Love Orchestra.
Also joining the line-up today are Minneapolis’ masters of emo-electro-pop NOW NOW, L.A. teen garage rockers The Regrettes, who combine a ferocious punk sound with irresistible hooks, and Nashville’s Sophie Allison (aka Soccer Mommy), whose recently released debut album Clean is full of sad-yet-melodic indie pop gems. There’s also the jazz and soul fusion of Connie Constance, the twisted pop of Insecure Men, made up of schoolmates Saul Adamczewski, formerly of Fat White Family, and Ben Romans-Hopcraft from Childhood, as well as new grime sensation Izzie Gibbs, and Kenyan-born Danish rapper K-Phax and his bubblegum hip-hop.
As always, the line-up is largely made up of relative unknowns, but acts considered to be on the cusp of something special. The Great Escape is essentially a showcase for new music from around the globe. Rory Bett, MAMA CEO, said, “It’s incredible to bring such a mix of artists together from across the world. The level of talent is undeniably the best this festival has seen and we’re so excited to help break the next generation of musicians.”
Expect more announcements in the lead up to the festival.
