Ex-Pavement legend Stephen Malkmus continues his journey with The Jicks on their new album, Sparkle Hard, out 18th May, and a UK tour, which includes a date at Brighton’s Concorde 2, 25th October.
Following on from the track ‘Middle America’ comes the second song to be released from the album, ‘Shiggy’, an insanely chipper old school four-chord stomper, which you can listen to here:
Malkmus upgraded his home-recording equipment and bought some electronic drums and had been working on the Netflix series Flaked (he penned the incidental music and the end theme song). Demos were done in one day in April of 2017 and then in May, The Jicks started recording at a new studio in Portland called Halfling, which is managed by multi-instrumentalist Chris Funk of The Decemberists, who produced the album.
After 17 years and six albums, it seems that Malkmus is still able to produce memorable hooks at will, and remain one of the best and most important alt-rock artists of the 21st century.
