Brighton record stores are gearing up for Record Store Day

With this year’s Record Store Day (RSD) imminent – Saturday 21st April – participating stores in the Brighton area are gearing up for what will be a long but exciting day selling fresh vinyl. Out of 240 participating stores in the UK, four are in Brighton (plus Union Music Store in Lewes). Many are really pushing the boat out, and providing in-house entertainment on this most special of days for independent retailers.

This year, among the 500-plus limited edition platters, you can find music by the likes of David Bowie, Led Zeppelin, Daughter, Rag’n’Bone Man (who is this year’s UK RSD Ambassador), Sufjan Stevens, The National, Arcade Fire, The Maccabees, The Cure, Courtney Barnett, Mac DeMarco, and Goat. It’s all done on a first-come, first-served basis, and once they’ve gone, they’ve gone!

Resident Records

Resident Records are no strangers to RSD, and this year they will be open at 6am, with Haley (formerly known as Haley Bonar) performing what must surely be her earliest ever gig, at 7am! Following her hugely successful 2017 album release, Impossible Dream, Haley releases two brand new tracks on 7” red vinyl, exclusively for RSD.

Rob Luis, founder and co-director of the Brighton-based record label Tru Thoughts, will be joining in with the festivities and spinning tunes at the shop counter from 2-3pm.

Daniel Wakeford, whose album is getting its debut vinyl release for RSD, will be performing a stripped back set at 3.30pm, followed by Tru Thoughts artist Rhi at 5.30pm, whose debut album of 2017, Reverie, will be released on vinyl for the first time too. Finally, the awesome three-piece prog-fusion instrumentalists The Physics House Band will surely shake the foundations from 7.15pm onwards. For RSD they will be re-issuing their 2017 album Mercury Fountain on double coloured vinyl, and with bonus tracks.

Resident will be stocking over 500 of the limited edition, specially produced titles from the official UK product list (available on a first come first served basis). The full list can be found here: http://www.resident-music.com/collection&path=25493

Vinyl Revolution

Newly established Brighton-based independent record store Vinyl Revolution will be hosting its first Record Store Day on 21st April, providing its customers with access to exclusive vinyl releases, as well as numerous live performances outside the store in Duke Street.

Already confirmed to play outside on the day are Filthy Tongues (ex-Goodbye Mr Mackenzie) from Glasgow, Mudlow, White Room, Desperate Journalist, and Dirt Royal, who won a competition organised by Vinyl Revolution for a band to open proceedings at 12.45pm.

Vinyl Revolution will be teaming up with neighbours Bagelman, who will be providing the first 30 customers with a free breakfast bagel and hot drink! Many of the local businesses on Duke Street are also offering their support in various ways, including store discounts.

Rarekind Records

The rather brilliant Rarekind Records on Trafalgar Street are also participating again this year. Specialists in hip-hop, funk, soul, breaks and so much more, they will be open from 9am.

There will be no specific in-store entertainment this year, but check the shop out if you haven’t before; it is a veritable goldmine of vintage, classic, rare and new releases, all served by knowledgeable and music crazy fans. Check their website for all the RSD releases they will be stocking.

Bella Union

Bella Union are one of the most well-known independent labels in the country, having released a huge number of fantastic albums over the years by artists such as Fleet Foxes, Beach House, Laura Veirs, John Grant, Midlake, Flaming Lips and Ezra Furman. Founder Simon Raymonde, (who used to be in the Cocteau Twins, and more recently has established Lost Horizons as his new band) is now based in Brighton, and decided a little shop was in order, selling Bella Union music and merchandise. Opening at 10am, pop into Bella Union for a free coffee, tea or hot chocolate whilst you browse through the Bella Union RSD releases. Mini-sets in the mini setting will come from Dog In The Snow and Penelope Isles, whilst Simon Raymonde (Lost Horizons/ Cocteau Twins) and Stephen Mallinder (Creep Show, formerly Cabaret Voltaire) will be ringing the tills for the day.
