Fresh Brighton duo Sit Down play one hell of a rodeo tonight as they headline a packed Green Door Store on their wild western-themed evening. Tonight offers not only some incredible talent from the duo through colossal riffs, powerhouse vocals and great energy, but has also introduced this crowd to some of the greatest upcoming Brighton talents around right now.
Sick Joy open tonight and, as always, never fail to amaze. The trio kick things off in true rock’n’roll, grungy style through their fuzzy riffs and Mykl’s supernatural vocal tones, ‘Stars’ makes a nice opening to their set and the guitar and punching drums fill the room, putting a pulse into the evening. Sick Joy are definitely a Brighton talent that you won’t regret checking out, these guys will be going far. Following Sick Joy are Drip Gloss (Formerly Ms Thng), playing their first show since June. The band are tight and hold a far more colourful, dreamy vibe, a warming presence floods the venue during their set as the crowd begin to sway side to side, the room is definitely ready for some Sit Down.
Duos are always a hit or miss set-up. They either hit the mark perfectly or feel incredibly empty, I can assure you now, Sit Down are nothing like the latter. As the two take their positions and open with the gargantuan ‘Bloodlust’ their talents resonate through immediately. Vocalist Katie Oldham is spectacular and, despite being hidden behind her drum kit, she belts her notes to such an extent that all eyes are fixated on her. Meanwhile, guitarist Greg Burns demonstrates a great level of dexterous riffs and powerful guitar which keeps the track feeling whole, the raw energetics of the performance are fantastic and could not have been a stronger kickstart to the evening’s chaotic ambience.
The only way seems to be up as the two proceed to increase the ante further, making their energy reach an almost incomprehensible level. Greg proceeds to thrash himself about the stage whilst every crash cymbal that Katie hits rings loud and true, inducing an electric buzz throughout the room. Fans and friends are both in attendance tonight and all are eager to have a dance along to the massive tunes. Despite only having fully released a select few tracks, there are many present who know and love the lyrics, Sit Down have the audience eating out of their hands.
Continuations of vivid sound and screeching guitars pour out, all whilst the band uphold great smiles on their faces. An older track, ‘California’, is brought out and, despite Katie’s announced hesitation, the track still upholds a great deal of fun grunge and a strong beat and a catchy chorus you can’t help singing along to, even if you’ve never heard the track before! A closure of an unreleased exclusive song, written especially for tonight’s theme, is ‘Round ‘Em Up’ and is a hilariously fantastical way to finish the night. The track allows for one final scream of riff and heavy drumming from Katie before the duo are splatted in the face with cream pies. A brilliant ending to any show if I ever saw one!
Overall, Sit Down are a band which I don’t think you can avoid listening to. They are a definite rising name within the Brighton scene and have such a large amount of potential, I don’t think even they realise! I can genuinely see the two going immensely far with their musical career and have demonstrated that homegrown music really does make for the best surprises. I would urge you to get on board with the Sit Down hype before they take off. Trust me, you won’t regret it!
