Kudu Blue have to be one of the most exciting up and coming acts of 2014. Sparking similarities with artists such as Bonobo, Chinese Man and Massive Attack, Kudu Blue are set for big things this year.
They’ve recently collaborated with Yumi & The Weather (another band highly recommended by BrightonsFinest) with their track ‘Must I Wait’. Kudu Blue have done a brilliant remix of the track by putting their own stamp on it with horns, haunting samples and mixed with simple, yet effective beats.
I was astonished when I found out that this gig at The Green Door Store was in fact Kudu Blue’s first. I’ve heard that they’ve been hiding away in the studio recording and rehearsing all of last year – and it shows! This time spent preparing for the stage seems to have done Kudu Blue well as they performed an incredibly tight set with a wonderfully infectious stage presence. Kudu Blue are a collaboration of extraordinarily talented musicians, who are clearly in love with what they do. This is certainly evident in their live performance.
Kudu Blue had a really effective colourful, abstract film installation screening whilst they were playing which allowed the audience to loose themselves in the hypnotic music whilst being entranced by the swirling visuals. Kudu Blue also had some live collaborative moments with various singers/rappers joining them onstage. Among these were; Frankie Stew (part of FS&HG who recently supported Rizzle Kicks @ The Dome ), Eva Rose (from the recently disbanded ‘Apples & Eve’), Ruby Taylor (Of Yumi & The Weather) and Clementine Douglas (who’s voice is a love child of Beyonce?e and Lianne La Havas). These collaborations added beautiful variation and kept us wanting more.
We highly recommend you get down to the next Kudu Blue gig – rumour has it they’ll be playing at a Physics House Party. I’ve also heard that they’re currently working on a remix for the rapper Angel Haze (Island Records), so watch this space!
