The daylight emitting, enclosed layout of Patterns gives an audience a licence to believe they could be anywhere. Add into the equation the venue’s fluorescent lighting rig and there was no reason for Saturday night’s revellers to believe the beach across the road wasn’t in fact Miami circa 1983.
Live Reviews
Los Albertos – The Haunt – 1st October 2016
The atmosphere at The Haunt was already electrifying even before the support group Ratbag took to the stage to produce a rousing and vibrant performance which upped the temperature even more and spoke volumes for their own unique sound. Vita on lead vocals and accordian was visually captivating and…
Lonely The Brave – The Haunt – 3rd October 2016
A Lonely The Brave show is not just your average gig, it is an experience of raw emotion, hard hitting instrumentation and a level of passion which goes above and beyond any artist I’ve seen this year. This was the third date of the bands’ September/October tour and…
Mitski – Green Door Store – 1st October 2016
Probably the most critically lauded indie rock artist of 2016, Mitski’s recent album Puberty 2 was equal parts anthemic and personal, explaining why tonight’s show is sold out well in advance. Tonight’s support band Trust Fund is oversensitive indie at it’s best. Maybe that sounds like damning with faint…
The Lemon Twigs – ICA, London – 22nd September 2016
Tonight, I saw new things – namely London’s ICA venue – different things (have you seen the hair of The Lemon Twigs?!) and things that are exceptionally hard to describe – try getting your head around the prog – 70s rock of The Lemon Twigs. The 4AD showcase,…
Resonators – Dome Studio Theatre – Wednesday 28th September
It seems Resonators can only move up: every hometown show they play is to a crowd a little bigger than the last, this time a sold-out Dome Studio was rammed to the rafters. The atmosphere in the room made it clear that most were long-term fans, eager to hear…
Red Fang – Concorde 2 – 26th September 2016
If there’s one thing to bear in mind when it comes to hard rock band Red Fang, it’s that they’re not a band that takes themselves – nor rock music in general – seriously. The group are known for their insane, and frequently hilarious, high concept videos. Usually involving…
Sundara Karma – The Haunt – 29th September 2016
A sure fire sign that a gig crowd will be young is a bouncer handing you a wristband to facilitate alcohol identification. Entering The Haunt, a striking chromatic wave of youthful exuberance proved this to be true for the final show of Sundara Karma’s UK tour. Youth is Only…
Honeyblood – Patterns – 29th September 2016
Honeyblood are everything the modern ‘indie-grunge’ band should aspire to be: badass, humorous and most importantly, willing to take risks. As first support, the local boys from Breathe Panel take to the stage; a dull room of murmured chit chat is immediately transformed into an ambient space of…
Moon Hooch – Patterns – 16th September 2016
Friday night gigs are a tough one, but Moon Hooch were a spot on choice by Club The Mammoth. Their music is forceful and primal, and their performance was high-energy to the extreme. The crowd were treated to a straightforward Friday night dance event but one that was also…
