The Shimmer Band’s fiery marriage of singalong choruses and explosive psychedelia is picking up admirers from all corners of the music industry. The Bristol band erupted onto the city’s live scene two years ago and managed to sell out their first gig off the back of a few DIY demos before managerial interest followed after their second show. A few single releases later and the five piece are now playing to packed crowds around the country. I managed to catch a few words with the group on their way to Nottingham, in the midst of their UK tour.
Can you give us a brief history of the band and how it was formed?
We've all been friends since school. We got together though a shared love of psychedelic rock and junk food.
How would you describe your music?
An explosive euphoric wall of sonic lighting…massive fat grooves and even bigger unifying choruses.
Talk us through the recent singles 'Sunkick', 'Freedom' and 'Shoot Me (Baby)', how did you go about the writing and recording process for each of these?
Chords and melody are written first. Then into the rehearsal room to make it sound like a harrier breaking the sound barrier. As for recording, everything goes on separately starting with drums.
What can we expect from future releases?
Expect multi-coloured beats and arms aloft choruses for miles.
Can you pinpoint the influences behind your music?
We're all massive fans of Creation Records and the bands associated with that label… Primal Scream, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Super Furry Animals, Ride…
If you could work with any artist, who would it be and what would they bring to?The Shimmer Band?
Would love to work with Gruff Rhys from Super Furry Animals, he's a musical genius and would bring some unique colourful fireworks to our music. The man's a sonic wizard.
What music are you listening to at the moment?
Lots of great new music right now…Cabbage, April, Black Honey, InHeaven. All really great bands.
What has been a musical eye-opener and how has it affected you?
Finally getting to watch The Rolling Stones live at Glastonbury in 2013 was amazing. The tunes are so good and so timeless it was joy to behold. What a night that was!
Is there a particular ethos that drives you as a band?
We strive to make music that's uplifting, unifying and euphoric. Laced with light and hope.
What has been your relationship with the city of Brighton, how do you find the city and are there any future gigs planned?
We've always had a great time in Brighton. We played Great Escape festival earlier in the year and it was really fucking great. Played to a packed room one in one out! Can't ask for more than that!
What are your plans for the next 12 months?
More of the same! Put out some new singles in the New Year and then kick the year off with a UK tour with our pals Cabbage in February. That's going to be carnage from the word go that one…we can't wait!
