The Weeks – The Green Door Store – 18th January 2015

It was a cold winters night but there was a good crowd at the Green Door Store even for tonights support The Apache Relay. Both them and The Weeks are based in Nashville, Tennessee and are currently touring the UK together. The Apache Relay are a more traditional mix of indie pop along with subtle mixes of other styles drifting in and out and when the mandolin and fiddle added to the mix, the music takes on a more folky aspect. The five members of the band looked a bit cramped on stage at times and I felt they could have been much more dynamic in their performance if they had the space to move. I only caught the end of their set but later checked out more of their music online and the more I heard the more I liked.
 
The Weeks are over here promoting their new Buttons EP and they are a slightly more edgy band than The Apache Relay although both bands sat well together on the bill. With only one lot of equipment on stage there was enough space for The Weeks to move around a bit more and singer Cyle Barnes seemed to take full advantage of this. Bouncing around the stage between Damien (bass) and Sam (guitar) while belting out their tunes with his very distinctive vocal sound with hints of central American drool plus a health mix of L.A. rock (Lynyrd Skynyrd meets the Red Hot Chilly Peppers). The guitarists backs this up with equally bluesy rock hooks and rifts with the rhythm section nicely keeping the music ticking over in the slower parts and helping ramp things up for the heavier parts. The mix at The Green Door Store had Alex Collier's keyboards up quite high making his music parts really stand out which was a good thing. He has some great little licks and melodies which add yet another layer to their music.
 
It's not hard to see why both these bands have been popping up on 'bands to watch' lists around the world. They both have that something special about them and their music.
